Whole-House THM, Chlorine, Chloramine & VOC Reduction Filter with Clack WS1 Control Valve

Improve the quality, taste, and odour of your entire household water supply with this high-capacity whole-house backwashing carbon filtration system.

This system combines catalytic carbon, coconut-shell activated carbon, and KDF-55 media to provide broad-spectrum treatment for chlorinated municipal water. It is designed to help reduce chlorine, chloramines, trihalomethanes (THMs), unpleasant tastes, odours, and selected dissolved organic contaminants before the water reaches your faucets, showers, plumbing fixtures, and household appliances.

The automatic Clack WS1 control valve periodically backwashes the media bed, helping remove trapped material, reclassify the carbon, and maintain consistent filtration performance with minimal day-to-day maintenance.

Ideal for Municipal Water: Recommended for homes, cottages, offices, restaurants, and light-commercial properties supplied with chlorinated or chloraminated municipal water.

Multi-Media Filtration Design

This system uses three complementary filtration media to provide broader treatment than a standard single-media carbon filter.

Catalytic Carbon

Catalytic carbon provides both adsorption and enhanced catalytic activity. It is particularly useful for reducing chloramines and other difficult oxidizing contaminants while also providing strong organic-contaminant adsorption.

Coconut-Shell Activated Carbon

High-activated coconut-shell carbon helps reduce free chlorine, unpleasant tastes and odours, and a broad range of dissolved organic contaminants from municipal water supplies.

KDF-55 Process Media

KDF-55 is a high-purity copper-zinc process media that uses oxidation-reduction reactions to help reduce chlorine and support the overall performance of the carbon filtration media.

Available System Sizes

Media Capacity Typical Application
1.2 cu. ft. Smaller homes and lower water-demand applications
1.6 cu. ft. Typical residential applications
2.2 cu. ft. Larger households and higher water-demand applications

Choosing the Correct Size: Select the system size according to household water consumption, peak flow demand, chlorine or chloramine concentration, and desired media service life.

All sizes require approximately 3–4 business days of handling time before shipment.

Media Configuration

Media / Component Quantity or Configuration
Catalytic Carbon Approximately 50% of the carbon media volume
Coconut-Shell Activated Carbon Approximately 50% of the carbon media volume
KDF-55 10 lb.
Washed Gravel Underbed Approximately 0.2 cu. ft.

Why Use a Gravel Underbed? The washed gravel supports the filtration media, improves water distribution through the tank, and helps the media bed expand properly during automatic backwashing.

How the Automatic Backwash System Works

During normal operation, water flows downward through the media bed. Chlorine and dissolved organic contaminants are adsorbed by the carbon, while catalytic carbon and KDF-55 provide additional treatment for chlorine and chloramine.

At the programmed interval, the Clack WS1 valve automatically reverses water flow through the tank. The backwash cycle expands and cleans the media bed, removes accumulated suspended material, and redistributes the media before returning the system to normal service.

The Clack WS1TC platform supports programmable regeneration intervals and dedicated backwash-only programs for filtration applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this system reduce chlorine?

Yes. Both the coconut-shell activated carbon and KDF-55 media are designed for chlorine reduction. The system is intended for point-of-entry treatment of chlorinated municipal water.

Does this system reduce chloramine?

Yes. The catalytic carbon media is specifically suited to applications requiring chloramine reduction. Proper sizing and sufficient contact time are important for effective chloramine treatment.

Does this system reduce THMs?

Activated carbon is commonly used for reduction of trihalomethanes and other dissolved organic compounds. Actual THM reduction depends on influent concentration, water chemistry, flow rate, contact time, and the condition of the carbon media.

Does the system require salt or chemicals?

No. This is an automatic backwashing filtration system and does not require salt or a chemical regenerant. The media bed is cleaned periodically using water during the automatic backwash cycle.

How long does the filtration media last?

Estimated media life is approximately 7–9 years under suitable operating conditions. Actual life depends heavily on chlorine and chloramine concentration, water usage, organic loading, backwash frequency, and system size.

What is the difference between regular carbon and catalytic carbon?

Standard activated carbon provides strong adsorption of chlorine, tastes, odours, and many dissolved organic contaminants. Catalytic carbon is specially processed to provide enhanced catalytic activity, making it better suited for difficult applications such as chloramine reduction.

Why is KDF-55 included?

KDF-55 provides an additional chlorine-reduction mechanism through oxidation-reduction reactions and complements the activated-carbon media in whole-house municipal-water applications.

Important: This system is designed primarily for treated municipal water. If your source water contains significant iron, manganese, hydrogen sulfide, hardness, sediment, bacteria, or other contaminants, additional pretreatment may be required.

Whole-House System Shipping

Freight Shipping May Be Required: Due to the size and weight of larger whole-house systems, some configurations cannot ship by regular parcel courier and must be shipped on a pallet by LTL freight.

Max Water will cover up to $199 of the standard pallet shipping charge. Additional residential-delivery, liftgate/tailgate, remote-area, appointment, or special-handling fees may apply depending on the destination and freight carrier.

If additional shipping charges are required, our team will contact you after the order is placed and before the shipment is released.

Before Ordering: For the best performance, system sizing should be based on your household water demand and a recent water analysis. Higher chlorine, chloramine, THM, or organic loading may require a larger media capacity or shorter service interval.
